COCO
Playbill autographed by
KATHARINE HEPBURN
1970.   Does Hepburn really need an introduction? The American Film Institute voted her Number One of 50 Great Screen Legends. She has won more Academy Awards than any other actress. Her work on both stage and screen has been universally (if not unanimously) acclaimed. She has been noted for her style, her independence, her eccentricity, her elocution, her fitness, her dedication to family and her long-lived devotion to SPENCER TRACY.
COCO
was her maiden voyage into musical theatre and she went at it with gusto. She knew she was not a singer but fortunately she had Alan Lerner as lyricist. Lerner had written songs for REX HARRISON in MY FAIR LADY. Harrison also did not sing; rather he "talk-sang". And that's what HEPBURN did in COCO. The musical was based on the life and work of designer COCO CHANEL. Despite (or perhaps because of) CHANEL'S voiced opinion that HEPBURN was too old for the role, the actress persevered at a very spry 63-years old. It was a demanding role; HEPBURN was hardly ever offstage. She won accolades and played to sold-out performances although the show itself fared not as well.  HEPBURN'S star power kept the show running for eight months on Broadway and then she took it on a five month tour. This Playbill is in VERY GOOD+ condition although the centerfold advertisement is detached from the binding. There is an inconspicuous crease down the center of the booklet which shows only in certain light. Please see photographs.
