Up for auction is this U.S. Navy World War II sterling silver mermaid pin honoring the “Silent Service” of submariners. It would have been given to a sweetheart back home. The back is stamped STERLING and contains the hallmark for the UNCAS Company. Uncas began production in 1911 and began using this hallmark in the mid 1920s.The pin, including the pin back, is in very good condition.
This pin is showcased in David A. Jones book,
U.S. Silent Service: Dolphins & Combat Insignia 1924-1945
